Κεντρική ηρωίδα στην ταινία είναι η Λουσία, μια σερβιτόρα σ’ ένα εστιατόριο της Μαδρίτης. Ο ξαφνικός θάνατος του συγγραφέα και φίλου της Λορέντσο διαταράσσει τις ισορροπίες της. Σημαδεμένη από την απώλεια και τελώντας σε κατάσταση πένθους, η Λουσία θέλει να ξεφύγει. Αναζητά καταφύγιο σ’ ένα νησί, στη Φορμεντέρα, όπου ο Λορέντσο έγραψε το μυθιστόρημα του. Όμως εκεί η Λουσία δεν θα βρει τη γαλήνη: η μορφή του Λορέντσο επιστρέφει με το πιο ανορθόδοξο τρόπο. Απαντήσεις σε αναπάντητα ερωτήματα θα δοθούν και ένα μυστηριώδες παρελθόν σιγά – σιγά θα αποκαλυφθεί…
